Jessica Hsiung

Jessica is a science and medical illustrator working in a variety of media including traditional pencil, pen and ink, watercolour and gouache, as well as digital media such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Jessica has a postgraduate certificate in Science Illustration from California State University Monterey Bay, where she honed her techniques illustrating natural history subjects and explored different media. She subsequently did internships at the Royal Ontario Museum and Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, gaining experience in stereoscope and compound microscope work, handling specimens and working closely with scientists illustrating reptile, amphibian and insect anatomy for research publications.

After completing the M.Sc. Medical Art program at Dundee University, Jessica returned home to Canada and joined the team at McGill University Health Centre’s Patient Education Office, creating booklets, guides and animations of medical procedures and aftercare for hospital patients. Currently, she is based in Ottawa, working full-time as an Entomological and Botanical Illustrator for Agriculture Canada. She continues to take on freelance projects which range in nature from anatomical to natural history to graphic design.

Her work can be seen on display at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and in a number of publications including most recently “Field Guide to the Flower Flies of Northeastern North America” (Skevington, Locke, Young, Moran, Crins & Marshall, 2019) and “Earthworms of Canada” (Reynolds, 2022).
