From our archives: the works of one of the MAA’s From our archives: the works of one of the MAA’s founding members Audrey Arnott (1901-1974). Audrey was the only British medical artist to study with the renowned medical artist Max Brödel in the USA. She might well have made a career in portrait painting, but was persuaded to devote her working life to medical art and mainly to producing neurosurgical drawings for Professor Hugh Cairns (1896-1952), who did not consider an artist as a luxury but as an essential member of any medical team. She studied at the Brödel School (Rochester) and brought back to Britain the Ross-board, carbon-dust technique, devised by Brödel.
Audrey will be remembered particularly for her exceptionally fine neurosurgical drawings. They are without doubt, among the most well-drawn and sensitive medical illustrations of the first half of the twentieth century. #maaofgb #medicalart #medicalillustration #carbondust
Congratulations to our member @eleanorcrooksculptu Congratulations to our member @eleanorcrooksculpture for the unveiling of her new breathtaking sculpture 'Santa Medicina' at the @sciencemuseum last week. We are looking forward to hearing Eleanor's talk about the process of making this artwork as well as discussing the use of Medical Art as public art at the next MAA conference. In the meantime, here are a few words from the artist on the piece: “I offer Santa Medicina as a patron saint for all who ever placed their hopes in the Science of Medicine: a defender against pain, sickness and mortality who faces down death with kindness and technology. We trust her endless ingenuity to keep our body stitched firmly to our soul, and when the end comes, to share that body with the living by transplantation.” #medicalart #bronzesculpture #medicine #sciencemuseum
We’ve been introducing some of the members who w We’ve been introducing some of the members who work “behind the scenes” of the MAA but we’re not quite done yet. Ruth Eaves received a Fellowship at this year’s conference in Cambridge for her ongoing and outstanding contribution to our Association. Here are a few lines about her and some examples of her work.................................................. “I graduated from the MAET in 2005 and became a member of the Medical Artists’ Association. I have served on Council and the MAET Education Committee and I’m also the editor of MAA News. I’ve been the medical artist at Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust for the last 25 years and the department manager for the last 15 years. I’m very privileged to work with a great team and I still love it. Working in an NHS environment allows me to work with some really exceptional people and become involved in some great projects. One of which I’ve been working on for the last three years and is to raise awareness of Cauda Equina Syndrome. My CES illustration was awarded the Dr Patricia Archer medal for the best piece of artwork in the professional exhibition at the recent MAA 70th anniversary conference in Cambridge where I also received a Fellowship. I must say that this is the best profession to work in and the MAA has such an array of talented artists pioneering medical art every day.” @rutheaves72 # #medicalart #digitalart #maaofgb #medicalartistsassociation #caudaequina #boltonhospital
